Filing your taxes shouldn't be painful, but most of us dread the process. Our team wanted to simplify your life and find you some great online tax services. One of the first we tried out was TaxCut by H&R Block. To find out how TaxCut compares to the other online tax preparation services, read through our findings outlined in the following review.

What's New?

TaxCut is now compatible with Mac, allowing users access to the online and offline versions of the product.
Audit support is now provided at no additional cost (although some restrictions do apply).

TaxCut User Interface and Product Application:
TaxCut is available in both online and desktop versions. Both the online and offline versions of the product are user-friendly and the online version offers pages that load quickly and an extensive help section. However, there were some glitches with the online product that we didn't run into with the software version. When you use the online version of TaxCut, if you stop using it for more than ten minutes, it automatically logs you out. While this is intended to be a security feature, it can be rather frustrating if you need to stop to take a break or you find yourself looking or reading through tax-related documents while trying to file your return.

Star Reviews Favorite Feature:
TaxCut's free audit support is a definite plus, since many other online tax services charge extra for this service.

Simple interview process eliminates the need to pick and choose forms.
Double-checks returns for errors.
Offers e-file ability.
Allows you to transfer federal data to your state tax return when you purchase both services.

Basic - $14.95
Premium - $29.95
Premium including state filing - $54.95
State - $29.95 extra

Customer Support:
Our experience with TaxCut's customer support was a bit more frustrating than that of any other provider. Pre-purchase support was very hard to locate. Once we did find the link that allowed us to contact customer support, we were sent an automatic response notifying us that it would take up to 48 hours for them to get back to us. They did get back to us within one business day, but the email we received was less than helpful and made little to no sense, not really answering our question at all.

It took us quite a while to locate the customer service phone number. However, when we finally did locate the number to call customer service, the call was answered very quickly (less than one minute hold time. Our rep was able to answer our question quickly and thoroughly and the call would have been idea had we not been asked to hold while he documented the call to provide us with a confirmation number. After holding for approximately five minutes, our rep still hadn't come back to the line with our confirmation number and we hung up.

Upside:
TaxCut is user friendly and relatively fast and once you have the customer service number, there is little to no wait to speak with a representative.

Downside:
There are some bugs that need to be worked out and the customer service experience as a whole was less than ideal.

TaxCut Summary:
If you've heard of H&R Block (we're sure you have) then you should really like their online tax preparation service: TaxCut. There is free audit support, which is great when so many companies charge. The service is user-friendly and pretty easy to fill out, which we appreciated. You can opt to e-file and TaxCut will even double check your work for errors. Basic online service will cost you $14.95, but there are plenty of e-file options, such as a Premium E-file for $29.95, a reasonable price when compared to other tax services. We felt that customer support could be improved overall, though.
