I just signed up for this and everything went smoothly although it takes a little time to get going. I guess as long as I don't get my identity stolen it is good ... but how do I know if I would have gotten my identity stolen had I not signed up?

Oh well, better safe than sorry.

Some identity theft protection services only monitor their members' credit reports monthly, quarterly or even annually. IdentityGuard® monitors your credit daily, immediately notifying you of any suspicious activity.

How IdentityGuard® Works:

IdentityGuard®'s Total Protection plan takes a multi-step approach to protecting your name and your credit. First, they provide daily monitoring of your credit reports with all three credit bureaus. The company also monitors the Internet's "black market" to see if your personal information is for sale to the highest bidder online. Then, to add another layer of protection, IdentityGuard checks public records, such as social security records, to make sure you haven't been the victim of identity fraud.

If there are any changes in your file they will email you letting you know what they found. If you do run into trouble, they have $20,000 of insurance coverage protecting you from financial loss. While it's not as much insurance as some of the other identity theft protection services offer, it's definitely better than nothing and most identity theft cases do not cost more than $20,000 to resolve.

IdentityGuard's Customer Service

IdentityGuard offers customer service via toll-free phone and email. When we called them we held for about three minutes before being connected to a friendly and knowledgeable representative. The rep we spoke with was able to explain the benefits of the company's products and how they could provide us with comprehensive identity protection. Email support was not as prompt. We did not receive a response until the following business day. The response we received, however, was in-depth and easy to understand. If you don't mind waiting a day for an answer and you don't like dealing with the phone, email support's knowledgeable answers will definitely serve you well. The only thing we would have liked to see done differently (besides faster email response times) is an online help database for members to reference.

Upside:
