Netflix is DVD by mail renting service that I really enjoy. They have hundreds of thousands DVD titles available and very reasonable membership fee. I very much enjoy features like queue, their movie description and rating system. I also like that they suggest you movies you might enjoy based on your previous selections. On the negative side sometimes it take long enough for you to get the new set of DVDs and sometimes they come separately. Also a few times I received damaged DVDs which was frustrating because I had to wait extra 4-5 days to replace it. Great service overall.

A great new movie rental company.

I would say after my bad experience with blockbuster.com online rentals, Netflix.com really help me reconsider the covenicence of online movie rentals. With there quick turn-around time (one day for me) I was able to get my movie without having to leave my own home. There is a much wider selection than blockbuster and the movies are always in stock when it comes to new releases. Also with there two free months, the prices are MUCH lower then that of its competitors. The only thing that I think they should do is have a rewards program where you can get one month free which is similar then blockbuster. Other than that, Netflix has and will be my main source when it comes to the convience of online movies.

When the Star Reviews team decided to dig in and review the best online DVD rental services, we had to put Netflix at the top of our list. After all, they were the ones who braved the critics and beat the odds with their revolutionary online DVD rental concept. Now that Netflix has paved the way, other online DVD rental hopefuls want in on the action. But how do they measure up to Netflix? Is Netflix still tops when it comes to renting DVDs online? Here's what we dug up during our research...

Star Reviews' Favorite Feature:

We really liked the fact that Netflix doesn't just offer DVD rentals via the mail, they also offer online movie rentals that you can watch directly on your PC without having to wait for postal service delivery.

The Netflix Experience:

The Netflix website is almost a no-brainer. As soon as you hit the homepage there is an easy-to-see link for the free trial.

Once you click the free trial link you'll be taken to a page that asks you which Netflix plan you want to sign up for. Their most popular plan consists of unlimited DVD rentals each month, up to three out at a time, and unlimited hours of movie rental on your PC for $16.99 per month.

Once you choose the plan you want you are asked for your name and your shipping information. You are then asked for your credit card information to begin the free trial. We were a bit torn at this point. While we don't like free trials that require credit card information, online DVD rental trials are a bit different and we must make an exception. Since you're entering into a rental agreement and getting the company's property because of it, we guess it's not too unreasonable for them to request your credit card info.

Once your credit card and sign-up information has been processed, you're on your way to getting DVD rentals delivered right to your door. Simply browse through Netflix's online catalog (there are literally thousands of titles) and add the movies you want to rent to your rental list. Netflix then mails the titles they become available in the order you determine.

We do have to say that Netflix's selection is quite impressive. There are more than 100,000 DVD titles to choose from and there are an additional 10,000 titles you can view instantly on your computer. From old classics to new releases, Netflix can keep any avid movie buff busy for the rest of their lives. The ordering process is user-friendly and managing the titles in our rental list was easy and intuitive.

Netflix Customer Service:

Netflix offers customer service via an online help engine and a toll-free customer service phone number, although you wouldn't know that they have phone support by visiting the site. We had to do a Google search for their customer support number to find it. Once we did find the number, service was prompt and courteous. Our call was answered almost instantly and the rep we spoke with was friendly and helpful and gave us very informative answers to the questions we asked. The online answer database also proved helpful, eliminating the need to contact phone support for commonly asked questions.

Upside:

Requires credit card info up front, even for free trial.
