As soon the Star Reviews team caught wind of a new digital newspaper delivery service, we knew we had to check it out. What we found was a company called NewsStand, a site offering the ability to read your favorite publications from the comfort of their home or office right on your computer. Customers can either read newspapers using the Classic NewsStand Reader or a new system called iBrowse. Is NewsStand a great way to save time, trees and money? Here's what we found out...

Star Reviews' Favorite Feature:

We love the fact that NewsStand offers so many ways for customers to view the contents of their favorite newspapers and publications. The Classic NewsStand Reader software allows you to read news offline, while the iBrowse system operates through your Internet browser. These unique programs are not available at any other newspaper website, adding something unique to NewsStand’s services.

The NewsStand Experience:

The first thing we noticed about the NewsStand website was that it immediately provided us with a list of available newspaper titles and prices. Talk about up-front pricing! We came across some sites that didn't give pricing information at all. NewsStand was a breath of fresh air.

When we began browsing the website, we were pleased to see that most of the newspapers are offered at a discounted price. However, we noticed that a lot of major titles are missing from NewsStand’s list, including US version of The Wall Street Journal (although Asia's was offered) and Chicago Tribune. It disappointed us a bit as we felt that NewsStand's selection may be lacking.

If you do happen to find something you like, you won't have any problem buying it. We really liked NewsStand’s checkout system, which provided us with a range of options regarding subscription length and days of delivery. It also provided us with a preview of our selected newspaper, which was displayed on the computer screen to give us an idea of what our viewing experience would be like.

Overall, we felt the NewsStand website really does go out of its way to assist customers in making informed decisions about the company’s products, services and technology.

NewsStand Customer Service:

We were really impressed by NewsStand’s customer service options. The company allows customers to search the NewsStand Knowledgebase for answers to their frequently asked questions. You can also submit an e-mail question to the customer support team. We received a response to our email question within one business day.

We were initially happy to see a toll-free number for live customer support, although hours of service for phone support were not listed. Unfortunately, after navigating an automated system (i.e., ignoring the automated options so we could speak with an operator) the phone just rang and rang with an automated message telling us all operators were busy every few minutes. We held for about eight minutes, and that's all of the country western on-hold music we could handle.

Upside:

Titles offered from several countries, easy-to-use website, convenient online reader.

Downside:

Limited selection.
