If you've got a computer and you're connected to the Web, a comprehensive Internet security product is a non-negotiable addition to your software collection. Symantec recently released Norton Internet Security 2008 and it was only natural that we grab our own copy ASAP so we could add it to our Internet security reviews. We were psyched to decipher whether this brand new software program was a go-ahead or not, so we got testing! See what we discovered below.

Star Reviews Favorite Feature:

Identity Safe-This feature allows you to create "cards" that contain personal information such as your contact details and a credit card number. Then, when you visit a legitimate website and want to make a purchase, you just activate the card and all of the information is automatically entered so no one sees it and even if a keylogger were on your system (which would be doubtful since it probably couldn't get past Norton's security), the controller would never gain access to your credit details.

Norton User Interface and Product Application:

Installation and setup of Norton Internet Security 2008 was pretty standard. Just make sure you're running on Windows XP or Vista and that your old Internet security program is already un-installed. If not, you're going to run into trouble. Also be prepared to spend some time waiting for the download to complete (exact times will vary depending on Internet speeds). Once the download has completed, however, the process is rather quick and simple. Step-by-step prompts guide you through the install and set-up process and Norton should be up and running before you know it.

The first thing we noticed when perusing the Norton Internet Security 2008 interface was the lack of customizable features. It looks like Norton takes the reigns with this software, limiting what options the user can customize. For example, try as we might, we could not find a control that would allow us to scan only recently modified files. It seemed an "all or nothing" deal when system scans were in question.

On the bright side, we were really impressed by the new network monitoring utilities. Not only does Norton Internet Security 2008 monitor your network, but the network administrator can also run scans and updates on the other computers on the network without being in front of them. This means a user sitting downstairs in the office could run a scan and perform updates on a computer located in an upstairs bedroom. We felt it was very convenient to be able to perform Internet security maintenance on all network PCs from one location.

Norton Internet Security 2008 also integrates anti-phishing features, anti-spam features and even puts all of your network ports into "stealth" mode, hiding your PC from potential hacker attacks. All in all, it's comprehensive coverage that's easy to use (if not easy to customize). If you do run into any problems when operating the product, you have easy access to help. It used to be that getting a hold of Norton's support was like running the gauntlet. Now you can address your software issues with the click of a mouse using Norton's AutoFix feature.

All in all, Norton Internet Security 2008 proves to be a comprehensive Internet security solution that offers advanced protection while being easy to use.

Customer Support:

When using Norton's new support system you click on Norton's AutoFix feature and it will identify and, if possible, correct whatever issue you are having at the time. If AutoFix can't fix the problem, it will give you instructions on how to do it yourself. If all else fails, you can contact Norton's customer support via phone, email or live chat. We really liked the fact there there are no guessing games when contacting Norton's support nowadays. A little screen shows you exactly how much time you can expect to spend waiting for each support option.

We suggest using live Chat. The hold times seemed to be shorter and you the support reps can use a remote access tool that allows them to take control of your computer and fix it then and there during the chat session. What more could you ask for?

Summary:

We liked what we saw in the Norton Internet Security 2008 Internet security software. You get comprehensive protection, including features such as anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-phishing, 2-way firewall protection, rootkit detection and network security monitoring. We enjoyed the Identity Safe, which allowed us to keep our personal information and credit card info secure when shopping online. While the new software was very extensive, it lacked customizable features in our eyes (it seemed to be an all-or-nothing product, which isn't a bad thing, but some of us like options in our settings.) There is also one-click access to technical support, which was very convenient. There's also an AutoFix solution, which will self-identify any problems you may be facing and fix it if it's able to. At a fairly reasonable price of $69.99 for a 1-year, 3 user license, we think this is a solid Internet security product.

Works very well but is expensive

Before the availability of free internet security protection through my AOL membership, I purchased Norton for use on my home PC. For the price I paid, you would think that it would be something you could use for years and years, but this is not the case. It works great and I never had a single issue or sneak attack break through it while I used it, but when you buy it, you only get updates for one year after purchase. After that, you have to pay for the updates. I thought that was a tricky way to get more money out of people that you have already sold software too and did not renew my updates with them once they expired. I would recommend this software to anyone who is willing to continue to pay for updates or has no option but to do this. It works well and will protect your systems.

Too big for my PC. I have friends that use Norton and all of them complain because their computer slows down with Norton, they can't have a regular internet speed.
