While MMORPGs are fun, they can also be costly.  You have to buy the game, pay the monthly fees, invest in virtual assets among other things. At Star Reviews, we wondered if a more affordable option was available.  And guess what? We found a site called OnRPG offering FREE MMORPGs. Ok, so we were skeptical, but continue on for our experience below.

About OnRPG:

OnRPG is a source for MMORPG games.  Fans of the genre can take many up and coming games for a spin and be a part of some great beta testing experiences.  They can also immerse themselves in the online worlds including dozens of games, available for free.  Plus, the site fosters a community feel with a number of forums and news about MMORPGs.

Navigating & Using the OnRPG Site:

Finding a game you want to play is easy.  You can choose from a number of different categories on the left side of the screen, including “Free MMORPGs,” “Other Free Games,” and “Open Beta.” After making a selection, you'll see a list of all the games in that category.  You can narrow your choices down further by choosing genres, such as “2D Fantasy” or “3D Sci-Fi.”  After selecting a title, you'll find out more information about the game and you'll see a link to the site where the game can be downloaded and installed.

OnRPG Selection & Availability:

The selection of games is phenomenal.  With more than 60 free MMORPGs alone available to play, plus dozens of other games in a variety of genres to choose from, you'll have a hard time narrowing down your choices and settling on the ones you want to try.

Pricing:

Most of the games offered on the site are available for free.  In some sections, you will find reviews and information for top MMORPGs such as Everquest II and World of Warcraft.  Otherwise, you can find plenty of ways to play without spending a penny.

Customer Support:

OnRPG's customer support comes primarily from a FAQ's page and a contact form.  A phone number is also available, but the company is based outside of the United States so players looking to save money probably won't be spending the cash to call overseas with a question.

The FAQ's page is incorporated into the site's forums which means locating your question is difficult.  You have to enter a word or words related to your question then possible questions with their answers are displayed.  You can't simply look at a list of common FAQ's to find the one you want.

The contact form is probably a better choice. We sent a question using the form and received a response in fifteen minutes.  Our question was answered in a friendly and personal way which we really liked.

Upside:

Games are free.  Dozens of games to choose from.  Easy to navigate site.

Downside:

FAQs are hard to search through.

Summary:

The best multiplayer online games aren't always the ones requiring the most investment.  OnRPG offers plenty of great games that don't cost anything.  The site also offers MMORPG reviews for the games, so you can more easily compare multiplayer online games.  OnRPG is easy to navigate and fun to explore.  The only drawback is the difficulty of digging through the FAQs to find answers, but the fast and friendly email response we received made up for that difficulty.
