When it comes to the world of music download websites, there are the good, bad and ugly. The good are the services like iTunes, Rhapsody and Napster. The ones that let you legally download all the songs you want (for a price of course). The bad and the ugly are the sites that let you download music illegally, and potentially get a few nasty viruses, worms and spyware infections in the process. So how do you know which sites are which and which of the good sites are the best? That's where our music download service reviews come in. Knowing Rhapsody was one of the good guys, we decided to head their way and check them out. Here's what we discovered...

Star Reviews' Favorite Music Download Feature:

We really like Rhapsody's "Rhapsody To Go" plan that allows users to download as many songs as they'd like to their MP3 players. If you're constantly changing songs or downloading new music, this could save you a pretty penny each month. Just be warned, when you cancel the subscription you lose access to all of the songs you accessed through the service.

The Rhapsody Experience:

Rhapsody's website wasn't as user-friendly as we'd have liked, but the actual Rhapsody software is definitely easy to use so we could be forgiving in regards to the website navigation. Our biggest gripe was the fact that the main page of the site makes it look like there's just one Rhapsody subscription and you only pay $12.99 for it. This isn't true. There are many ways to get music from Rhapsody and the $12.99 plan isn't even the best one. With that plan, you can only listen to Rhapsody music on your PC. Since most of us use these services for music on the go, that plan probably isn't even worth consideration.

Once you get past the whole $12.99 Rhapsody Unlimited subscription being pushed in your face, you realize that there are indeed other plans available, including the $14.99-per-month Rhapsody To Go. Of course, you could shun the monthly plans altogether and opt to pay for each song that you want to download.

The download and installation process for Rhapsody's software was hassle-free, but we suggest customizing your install or you're going to find that Rhapsody becomes your default media player and that's not always a good thing. All in all, the entire download and set-up process should take 30 minutes to an hour depending on your Internet connection.

Once Rhapsody is up and running on your PC you can search for music and download your favorite tunes. You can also listen to them right on your desktop if you prefer. The only thing we'd have liked to see was more variety of media available. While iTunes offers movies and audio books in addition to music, Rhapsody does not. That being said, Rhapsody definitely has its act together when it comes to music selection. There are more than 4 million songs to choose from and the service is compatible with a wide variety of media players. If you don't have an iPod and can't access iTunes, Rhapsody is definitely the next best thing.

Rhapsody Customer Service:

Rhapsody offers customer support via an interactive online community, searchable FAQ database, email, live chat and toll-free phone. We found all methods to be extremely helpful and we were so pleased to see a website that understood the value of live one-on-one help via chat and phone options. We did have a bit of a hold time for both phone and chat, but it was definitely worth it in the end. Email support was prompt, sending us an answer within one business day. If you're a stickler for service, Rhapsody is definitely going to be your cup of tea.

Upside:

Millions of songs to choose from, great customer service, different subscription plans to choose from.

Downside:

Does not support iPod.

Overcomplicated to use and will not support iTunes

I have used Rhapsody through the MyCokeRewards program to obtain free music downloads. I have to say that I am not very impressed with this site. The site does not support copy/paste functions, will not let you listen to anything unless you become a member, only allows you to listen to 25 songs a month unless you want to pay for a upgraded membership, and does not support iTunes transfers. In order for me to get the songs I download into iTunes, I have to record the song and then upload it again. If the songs I am getting were not free, I would not use this service and I would not recommend it to anyone.
