I recently returned from a 3 month trip in Europe, where I traveled all across Europe and visited 10 different countries, from Russia to England.  I brought my headset, a laptop, and a 3 month subscription to Skype and just like that, I was connected to the U.S no matter where I was. Skype is a pretty spectacular deal.  When calling from your computer to another computer that has Skype, the call is completely free and you can send video as well.  When you're calling a land line, it's cheaper than any real phone (especially if calling internationally), and you can get subscriptions that allow you to call as much as you want for one flat fee a month.  The sound quality is pretty good (although there is sometimes a bit of lag), and calls drop only about as often as they would on a typical cell phone.  The technology still has some room to improve, but it's not buggy and it's not frustrating to use.  I don't necessarily recommend that you drop your current phone and just install skype (although you would save a significant amount of money in doing so), but skype is a worthy complement to your communication tools.  Use it to call a friend skype to skype and save minutes, or take it on an international trip and never have to buy expensive phone cards again.  Skype comes highly recommended.  5 stars.
