Vonage Voice Over IP Review

Ive had vonage way before everyone caught on about Voice over Ip. It is great because all of my family is in new york. Phone companies charge you an arm and a leg for unlimited long distance and local. I believe i was paying as much as 80 dollars a month. I switched over to Vonage and saved 50 bucks and still have the same features I did with the phone company. Only thing that frustates me is that for some reason my monthly bill always flucuates a couple of cents and I am not aware as to why if i dont do anything othere then what i signed up for. I have been meaning to call and get this straightened out but overall im pleased wih my vonage service

I have been a vonage customer for over 2 years and I must say that I have very little complaints. As with any VOIP service your phone does not work (this is expected) but they do offer a feature that will forward all of your calls to another number when you have no connectivity. The only issue I have had with vonage is that when you use your computer for high bandwith activities (i.e. Downloading file or uploading them) the sound quality of the calls is horrible. Vonage has a new feature called visual voicemail, which we really liked. The program automatically transcribes your voice mail messages to text so you can read them from your email or from your phone. This works great if you need to retrieve voicemail from a noisy location such as airports, restaurants or other group-gathering establishments.

Vonage is the biggest of the top voice over IP services on the Web. They signed up their first residential customer in 2002 (that customer is still with them) and now provide VOIP services to more than 2 million customers nationwide. If their growth is any indication of their quality, this one's a winner.

The Vonage Experience:

Signing up for Vonage was very easy. First, we had to select the plan we wanted. Then we were asked if we wanted a new phone number assigned by Vonage or if we wanted to transfer our existing number. When we let Vonage know we were going to transfer our existing number, they informed us that it would take about 10 business days to complete the process. Not only were they up front and honest about the fact, but the 10-day estimate is half of what many of the other top voice over IP services require.

Once you make your phone number choices, Vonage asks you to choose your hardware. Most of the Vonage hardware is free, but upgraded and optional hardware (such as the Vonage V-phone) will cost money (although the prices are discounted). After choosing our hardware and providing our 911, billing and shipping information, we were set.

Vonage's Customer Support:
Vonage offers customer support that far exceeds the experiences we had with most of the competition. Our hold time when calling Vonage was well under five minutes and the rep had our question answered in less than a minute. Email support was also prompt, with a thorough response in about 1 business day. The Vonage website also offers online support via the FAQ and knowledge database. There you'll find answers to most of the questions you'll run into when using the Vonage service. In the world of VOIP, it seems great customer service is hard to come by. Vonage is the exception to that rule and we commend them for it.

Upside:
Great customer support, a variety of features, fast phone number transfers.

Downside:
More expensive than some of the other top voice over IP services.

Summary:
Vonage is definitely a top choice in Voice Over IP providers. Not only do they have the following and esteem with establishing themselves as an excellent VOIP phone service, they're pretty affordable. A basic service with 500 minutes will cost you $14.99 a month, but we feel their professional customer support and features warrant this fee. Customer support by way of telephone and email were excellent, as were the FAQs in the Help database. Signing up for their service is effortless, and if you wish to use an old number, it will only take 10 days to convert (half the time of their competitors.) One feature we loved was Visual Voicemail, in which your voicemails are transcribed to text you can read on your phone or by email. How convenient! We definitely recommend this VOIP service to anyone.
