I used to be a huge fan and a regular customer of Zappos. During their first few years, they had unbeatable customer service and competitive, if not always great, prices. They had sale items and once in a while, you'd find a great deal. Of course, the great part was that you got free shipping on your order and on returns, which made buying from them risk-free. Brilliant. However, at some point they changed their business model. They decided that great customer service and free shipping would allow them to charge higher prices--higher even than the manufacturer's retail price in many cases. I can't imagine paying more than the manufacturer charges on their own site and since there are absolutely no deals to be found, the free shipping simply doesn't make up for it. I can find free shipping and better prices at a couple of other competitor's sites. So now they are just another online retailer to me.
