Social networks like Facebook and Myspace are in close competition with each other, and both seem to be fighting to maintain their place at the top. With the recent layoffs of top executives at Myspace making news headlines, Facebook has seen this as a means to take the crown this year (although Myspace is still doing financially better than Facebook). The social networking website, Facebook.com, made attempts to acquire Twitter last year, but failed. Last week Facebook has announced that they have added Twitter-like capabilities to their website making sure that its users have near real-time web capability.

Real-time web is beginning to evolve within the internet and is considered the next big revolution. Facebook has awhile to go before it has the actual real-time web capability, but it has made steps this week to be a little closer to the real thing. They have changed characteristics such as the status prompt in an attempt to becoming more like Twitter. Also, they changed their policy of only allowing you to have no more than five thousand friends. Now, like Twitter, you will no longer have a limit on the amount of friends you can add. You will also have a profile instead of a Facebook "page." Facebook isn’t necessarily competing with Twitter at this time, but it is a great move forward for them to start taking steps in breaking down barriers within the Facebook social network so that eventually they don’t start having to compete with Twitter in addition to Myspace.
Twitter grew at an astronomical rate in 2008, and broke down barriers that Facebook has yet to bring down and Twitter tends to allow applications more so than Facebook which in turn brings in much more traffic. App developers are flocking to Twitter because of this, so Facebook is addressing the situation. Seeing as how Facebook’s users have voiced their opinions loudly to recent changes in the layouts and to recent policy changes, we will need to keep an eye on how Facebook deals with the threats from the other social networking websites.
