The number of new Americans filing unemployment claims also rose. Over 650,000 out of work people filed a new claim last week. Even with the Dow Jones Industrial Average on the rise and approaching the 8k mark, these numbers serve to show that the economy isn't rebounding as fast as we hope it will.
The unemployment numbers tell us how hard it is to find a job in today's market. More people are competing for the same job and workers are staying jobless longer. With major corporations such as IBM planning even deeper job cuts, this is a trend that unfortunately may be with us a bit longer.
