So I openly admit that I am a gadget freak. I love my toys and usually end up with the latest slick piece of technology whether I need it or not. That being said, there is rarely a case where I see something new and am totally blown away by it. However, I was in a meeting yesterday with someone who was using the Pulse Smartpen from Livescribe and I ordered one as soon as I got back to my desk.
The pen basically records and saves everything you write and say. Don’t confuse it with a tablet, this is a pen. Yes, you have to write in special notebooks, but they are basically regular paper and available in a wide variety.
You simply tap the little record icon on the bottom of your notebook page and the Smartpen records everything you write. The really neat thing is that the pen is also recording the conversation that is taking place. So when you go back to your notes in a week and are wondering, “what exactly did I mean by that”, you just tap the note with your pen and it plays back the conversation from when that note was written.
Everything from the pen is transferred and saved to your PC or Mac via a USB charging cradle. The Livescrib desktop provides functionality for searching, viewing and replaying notes directly from your computer.

Notes can be saved in a variety of file formats or can easily be shared through the LIveScribe community (either publically or privately) or even Facebook. The pen is available in 1 GB for $149.95 and 2 GB for $199.95.
This is the ultimate meeting of old school note taking and drawing with the digital world of file storage and sharing. The only question I am still asking myself now is why didn’t I spend the extra money for overnight shipping?
