Marketing For Mothers Day

In the past two weeks my email box has been flooded with mother’s day offers and I am sure it will continue to grow over the coming weeks. I have no problem with marketers trying to peddle their wares when appropriate around a holiday and Mothers Day is as good as any. Where I do have some issue is when I get the completely unrelated offers under the guise of Mothers Day. Does Sports Authority really think that my mother is going to give me a big kiss and hug and start to tear up when she unwraps a brand new pair of Nike Air Zooms (that I saved 15% on)? I mean the smell of new sneakers is nice but I think Mom will prefer Roses. Here is another favorite, 15% off a pair of Crocs. Now if a new pair of plastic shoes doesn’t spell "love", I don’t know what does.

One of my favorite tech magazines has a list of Mothers Day suggestions that I read through. I am not sure that there is a mother who is techie enough to prefer the Bluetooth ear piece to a dozen long stems.
I am 44 years old and through all the Mothers Day gifts I have purchased for my mother, sister, grandmother, soon to be mothers and other important mothers in my life … I have never purchased anything other than flowers. Roses, Carnations … whatever looks good that year but flowers spell Mothers Day! Of course, this is just one mans opinion.
