When we saw the infomercial for the Big Top Cupcake we just knew we had to get one in and give it a try. Making and eating a huge cupcake just looked like too much fun. The advertisement made it look so simple that anyone could make a great looking cake. We certainly aren’t going to be winning any cake making competitions any time soon so we seemed like perfect candidates to see how easy the Big Top Cupcake really was to use.
The Big Top Cupcake itself is very basic and comes with two silicone-baking pans, one for the top half of the cupcake and one for the bottom. The baking pans are flexible and non-stick in order to make removing the cakes simple. The pan for the bottom of the cupcake also includes a top which when used will create a well in the cake that can then be filled for having a cupcake with filling in the middle. There is also an included recipe guide with lots of great cupcake ideas.
For our test we decided to go with a Boston cream cupcake. We followed the recipe from the Big Top Cupcake guide and used yellow cake mix for the cupcake, chocolate frosting for the top and instant vanilla pudding for the filling. In order to have enough batter the recipe calls for two boxes of cake mix. We followed the directions and sprayed the cake pans lightly with non-stick spray prior to filling them. Since the pans are flexible they should be placed on a baking sheet to ensure you don’t spill anything. The directions weren’t perfectly clear on how high to fill the pans but we did the best we could.
As advertised, the cakes slid right out of the pans with ease. However, the bottom cake was a little too small and the top was a little too big. Our estimates to filling were off this time, but after a couple of cakes it would be easy to figure out the perfect amount of batter to use in each half. We were able to adjust for this pretty easily by cutting some of the excess cake off the top to make a perfect fit. We also cut out some of the bottom cake to make a bigger well to hold our filling. Once we had the cakes right, we filled it, put the top on, frosted it and added some sprinkles for decoration. The result really looked awesome and we were quite impressed with the huge cupcake we had produced from the Big Top Cupcake.
Pros:
- Easy to use
- Non-stick
- Dishwasher safe
Cons:
- Slight learning curve to find optimal fill amount
We had a lot of fun using the Big Top Cupcake and were really shocked at how cool our big cupcake really came out. It would have been a huge hit at any party and was pretty fast and easy to make. The Big Top Cupcake gets an overall rating of 5 out of 6 Stars from StarReviews.
