Let me be honest with you before you read this review ... I hate the NY Times Crossword Puzzle. That is mostly because I have been getting beaten up by it almost every day since I graduated college. So the question would then be, why would I now want to pay more money to get beaten up daily? The answer is obvious, because now I can compare myself to other people who are getting beaten up worse.

Okay, on to the reality of the
NY Times Crossword Puzzle paid membership. If you are a crossword junkie, The
NY Times Crossword is for you and should be worth the price, $39.95 for the year or $6.95 per month. First of all you have to download Across Lite (currently 2.0) which is a small program that runs on Windows or Mac and then on a daily basis you get to go in and download that days
crossword puzzle. Across Lite is a pretty simple program and just takes a few minutes to get adjusted to and if you are included to cheat, you are on your computer and Google is available right there. Isn’t doing crosswords like golf ... no cheating.
So what really makes this paid membership worth it?
The New York Times has made the crossword much more than a crossword, it is more like a community. If you are competitive, you can play for speed against the community or you can challenge someone to a game. Plus, you have immediately access to over 5,000 crosswords so the weekend (or week) after you join is pretty much shot and you will need some Visine by Sunday night.
You also get some other games that
NY Times has released and some bonuses on Sunday but this is really for the
Crossword Junkie. If you need to actually get out of the house, the Crossword Puzzle software is available for the iPhone and the Blackberry.
On a side note, there is no free trial on the
New York Times Crossword but we had no problem canceling the monthly membership. The New York Times Crossword Puzzle, definitely worth the $6.95 a month if you are a crossword junkie.
