Despite the dismal economic performance of the auto industry as a whole in these tough economic times, it seems that they are doing something right. After years of pounding their fists and telling everyone how great American made cars are, it seems that they may finally be making gains on the foreign auto makers. The University Of Michigans Customer Satisfaction Index, which includes surveys for computers, search engines and much more, shows that the US Automakers have taken over the top spots in car and light trucks.

Of course these gains reverse many years of dissatisfaction with the
US Auto Industry by consumers worldwide and may take a long time to reverse the trend of US Consumers purchasing foreign cars. Last year, Toyota took over the top sales spot from GM for the first time ever. Along with the stellar results from the
Customer Satisfaction Survey, JD Power has awarded GM's Buick a tie for the top spot on dependability. Overall, it seems as though US Automakers are "getting it".
Last year, the US Auto Industry as a whole needed to sell 16M cars per year to break even but after the recent restructuring, that number is just over 10M. Spurred on by a fleet of new cars such as the Cadillac CTS (which I drive and love) and a government restructuring, it seems that the US Auto Industry could be on the path to a revival. With their financial house in order, the last piece of the puzzle is to provide American Consumers, American Made cars that they can be proud of and want to drive again.
This process may take some time, but from the recent surveys ... and my own personal experience ... GM, Ford and Chrysler are on the right path. Now let's hope they can stay that way.
