It’s that time of year again: back to school. For kids it means early to bed, early to rise, and long school lunch lines. Parents have a much different set of anxieties, namely finding affordable clothing for today’s fashion conscious youth. The hallways of most American high schools look more like the runways of New York Fashion Week than ever before and your teenager will feel the pressure to keep up with the latest trends. If you have an up-and-coming fashionista on your hands, don’t worry. Here are a few helpful tips to keep your children looking current, without spending a small fortune.
Many times the best deals out there aren’t found at traditional department stores, but rather online. But before you even pull your credit card out, make sure to get some very accurate measurement s of your child’s frame. The biggest and most obvious downside to shopping the internet is your little one’s inability to try on clothing. I would recommend utilizing your computer to shop for your elementary aged children, but let your teenagers discover their own personal style. You’ll save yourself a lot of headaches if you allow your high schooler to choose his or her own look.
Shopping for teenagers can be very tricky. You still want to yield some control over what they wear, but in the end you know it is best to let them be who they are. The best piece of advice I can give you is one that has been handed down from my mother to me: give your child a budget, and let them go. This is a great opportunity to teach your teen about personal responsibility and the value of a dollar. My mother gave me a set amount of money and that was all I was going to get out of her. I must admit that during my freshman year I only spent about half the money on school clothes, and the rest on items that couldn’t exactly be considered a necessity. No matter how much I pleaded with her, she wouldn’t give in. Needless to say, the follow year, I was a little more cautious with my spending.

If your child is desperate for a pair of True Religion jeans, and you can’t afford the exorbitant price tag, consider having a yard sale to raise some funds. Advertise your sale well and you’ll be amazed how many budget minded parents will jump at the chance to save on their own children’s
back to school fashions. You’ll earn some much needed extra cash and clear out your closets in one foul swoop.
Have fun shopping with your children. Remember that as an adult you probably will not understand many of the fashion choices they will make. Just take a deep breath, and if your 15 year old wants to dress in black vinyl, be supportive. Hopefully, it’s just a phase!
