I have been on Facebook for about 4 months, and at first loved reconnecting with a few of my long lost friends. We chatted, exchanged wedding stories, baby pictures, and gave short accounts of our day to day lives. Then, the bottom fell out. I became inundated with random thoughts, senseless ramblings, and cryptic messages. I was asked to join causes, donate money to charities I had never heard of, and attend events scheduled in locations thousands of miles away. This just has to end, and that is why I am closing my Facebook account immediately.
Let me start from the beginning once again. My college friend, we’ll call her Mary, contacted me by telephone after years of separation. We spoke for a while, until she innocently uttered the phrase: “You know, A, B, C, so and so, and this person is on Facebook, you should sign up”! This sounded reasonable, and I set up an account that very night.
I spent the next few days posting photos of my beautiful daughter, our home, and various family outings. I found friends, and they in turn found me. I must admit there are a few people currently on my friends list that I have no clue who they are, but I don’t think I’m alone in this. People came out of the woodwork, and before I knew it, I had quite a few contacts. This progressed, and within 2 weeks I was posting several times a day, uploading picture upon picture, and checking my status constantly.
My Facebook activity was getting a little out of control, and this was when I had an epiphany. I realized that three-quarters of the people I was in contact with on Facebook, I was avoiding for a good reason: I didn’t like them. I had no interest in the mundane daily activities, and being in contact with them once again only conjured up memories of why I abhorred them in the first place. So I decided to quit cold turkey. I turned off my computer and vowed that I wouldn’t log onto Facebook for two days straight.

When I did finally sign in, what was waiting for me was an annoyance of epic proportions. I had five kidnap requests, four event requests, and countless other gifts. I quickly ignored them all without reading into any of the particulars. I was understandably disconcerted, and at that moment vowed my Facebook days were over once and for all.
This was three days ago. I’ve only been on Facebook twice since, and now have come to the conclusion that I have to walk away. I’ll lose touch with quite a few people, but I know that in the long run, it won’t have too much effect on them either. I still have my cell phone, and maybe I’ll rediscover the lost art of letter writing instead!
