When I learned the news that Dr. Oz was going to host his own daytime talk show, I almost jumped out of my seat. He is amazing, and I have loved him ever since the day he admitted that yes, doctors do make mistakes, to an audience of millions around the world. He is honest, thoughtful, and tells people how to live a healthier life, without sounding condescending or preachy.
The show is being taped in the same studio that once housed Conan O’Brien, so hopefully, it will bring him some good luck, not that he will need much. After all, he does have the Oprah Winfrey seal of approval and that carries a lot of weight amongst politicians and housewives alike. Dr. Oz is poised to become daytime talk fest royalty, and I for one will be tuned in on day one.
I’ve been reading about some of the specifics of the show, and I am quite intrigued. Apparently, his staff will only be allowed to snack on health conscious foods, and he is even monitoring the dining habits of the crew on Jimmy Fallon’s late night show. This should make for some awkward, yet very classic, television moments. He will also be discussing some hot buttons issues such as childhood immunizations and the impending swine flu epidemic. I’m sure he will tackle these sensitive topics with his trademark grace. Dr. Oz possesses a rare combination of sincerity and credibility, and I for one find him very refreshing.
His guests will also undoubtedly be entertainingly dysfunctional. One of his first is apparently an overweight husband that is being brought to the show by his distressed wife. He will be there as the target of an intervention and Dr Oz. will use this man to explain how an unhealthy lifestyle can take years off of a person’s life. America’s obesity crisis is not the only socially relevant topic that is going to be explored. Another is the effect that sleep deprivation can have on a person’s surroundings. A mother who sleeps minimally at night in order to care for her family is placed in a driving simulator. She is overwhelmed when it is revealed that if she continues to deny herself proper sleep, it could lead to the injury and death of others.

As for his competition, I don’t really think he will have too much trouble stealing audience away from "The Doctors" or CNN’s resident harbinger of doom Dr. Sanjay Gupta. I don’t know what it is about Dr. Mehmet Oz, but if I ever needed a quadruple bypass, he would definitely be at the top of my list. He has that human touch that just seems to be lacking in any of the doctors I have ever encountered. I think that his teachings on compassion and patient advocacy should be required subjects in medical school, alongside chemistry and anatomy. The show premieres on September 14th.
