I remember seeing the commercials and getting all the spam e-mails. It wasn't much different than the bar scene I remember telling myself. Did I really want to do this now that I had just ended a 20 year marriage? My answer was no.

Then one day my daughter is typing away on the keyboard, oblivious to the fact that I was looking over her shoulder as I was wondering why she was signing up for an
online dating site. She was married. Hmmm … I looked closer and she was entering my name.
"What are you doing? I asked."
"Signing you up so that you can find someone that will treat you right", was her reply. By the time I had absorbed what she just said, the page loaded and it said, "Welcome".
I just signed up to find that special someone ... I was now a member of e-Harmony.
I just paid to find that special someone but why couldn’t you sign me up on the free sites? After doing some research, beware of the free online dating sites, they are very limited. You can see your Match, you just can’t reply by sending e-mails until you pay a fee for the service. You can only wink on one site, which tells the person you are interested. How do you know if you are interested if you cannot communicate? So, free comes with a price. I was looking for someone that I would be compatible with.
All sites let you decide which geographical area you want to find your match and allow you to decide who you get email from according to gender, race, religious beliefs, etc. On all sites, you can add your picture and set up a profile. Are they willing to relocate? Why would I want someone who lives on the other side of the world when I lived in the United States? I would want to be able to see that person on a regular basis if this was the one person for me. Read profiles first. Their profile tells a lot about the other person.
After the long questionnaires, which actually made me think about myself, I had the option of e-mailing back and forth at first on the site or just jumping in headfirst. So I e-mailed him back and after I felt comfortable, we got to talk to each other on the phone.
We set up our first encounter to meet over coffee, which is a wise decision. In case I didn't like the person, I could escape in my car and leave. I left my phone number and his address with my daughter, just in case. It went very well and as of today we are still together and planning on getting married.
If you are hesitant about online dating sites, don't be. I highly recommend them. Check them out. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Dreams do come true, I know.
