Sustainability is the new wave of the future. Environmentally friendly has taken a front row seat in the most diverse corner of the world, Colleges. Why Colleges? What is a Green College? Good question.
Students in today's colleges are doing research and are much more aware of the need to save our fragile environment. By attending colleges that build a better quality of life, the need is much more in demand to eliminate global warming and our dependency on fossil fuels. When I was young, no one knew what the word sustainability meant. Ten years ago no one cared if a college participated in the green program. Today, it is a contributing factor in whether a student enrolls or not. The economy, water and air supply, natural resources, and most important student’s health all benefit from green buildings, practices and programs.

Let’s face it, most colleges are entities that make money. They have the resources to build using
green materials and procedures and make the environment "greener", while at the same time, teaching students Sustainability in academic programs and how to be
environmentally friendly.
From classrooms to laboratories, the sky is the limit when it comes to making
eco-friendly a way of life. Everything from windows to movie theaters on campuses, uses of insulation, cooling systems and recycling are being utilized.
Green colleges save because the cost of running and maintaining the school is less due to
environmentally friendly, cost efficient equipment. This enables the school to save money and spend the difference hiring new teachers, school textbooks, supplies and classroom computers. Students also car pool, get free bus rides and enjoy organic produce, grown on local farms, right down to digitization of paper resources, all on campus. Saving the environment is their main objective and a smart one.
Arizona State University, Tempe campus came in at number one out of 697 colleges for the highest rating for the year 2010 on the
green rating honor roll. University of Colorado at Boulder came in at number one for the year 2009. In order to make number one, a school has to have a rating of 99, which is the maximum.
