There is nothing worse then finding out your data such as family pictures and those important emails from family have just been wiped clean with no chance of recovery, not to mention your address book. "This couldn’t be happening to me!" Well, it just did. Most people today rely on their computer to save every important document and let’s not forget the kid’s pictures since they were little.
Permanently destroyed right before your eyes with no chance of recovery. Sounds drastic and it is. The biggest factor in loss of data is human error, accidentally hitting the wrong button. Next comes hardware or system failure, such as hard drives or motherboards, the heart of the computer. I know, been there, done that.
I can’t tell you how many people I run into in a day-to-day basis that have no clue as to what it takes to even turn on a computer. A simple push of the wrong key and your life’s work just bit the dust, not to mention the software program that was involved in helping the situation along or the virus you just picked up at some peer-to-peer site. All can be a contributing factor in data loss. Data loss can be expensive too, since most companies rely on data to run their businesses. Businesses lose millions of dollars each year because of data loss.
Other causes of data loss can happen when you accidentally drop your laptop on the floor, deleted a file by error, and formatted a drive the wrong way. The data is still there on the hard drive most of the time, but you just can’t view it any longer because it is sitting on another drive. But when it is gone forever, it can be devastating.
Natural disasters can also cause data loss. Living in Florida I constantly get electrical power surges when my electricity in my home goes off for a few seconds and comes back on just as fast. I cringe when that happens because my computer performs a hard shutdown. Lightening can strike and there goes some important piece of hardware that you just purchased 2 months ago that worked fine minutes before.
Software corruption I would say is the most annoying. I always make back up copies of my CD’s because low and behold if there is a fine scratch on the CD, it will corrupt the program. Software programs can be expensive.
Viruses can cause data error and happen most frequently with people who have Internet connections. Viruses when attached to emails, web pages, downloaded in software programs off the Internet, can cause severe data loss and hardware damage.

Get to know your computer when it comes to the sounds it makes while running. Basically if you notice any strange sounds coming from your computer, you are most likely experiencing data loss. A hard drive that clicks indicates corrupt firmware on the drive’s ROM chip, blown heads or alignment issues or bad sectors on the hard drive. Scrapping and grinding sounds indicates problems with the BIOS system not recognizing the external hard drive.
If your computer starts making sounds, turn it off. Leave it off until you can have it serviced. Turning it on and turning it off thinking it might fix itself can lead to permanent data loss. An operating system not found message typically means that the operating system files are damaged, the boot device priority has been changed, the partition table is damaged or the hard drive has been formatted.
When your system screen turns blue as you try to boot or during the middle of an operation, it can mean the operating system has been damaged, there may be bad sectors on your hard drive that the system is unable to read, your hard drive could be failing, you might have a virus, critical system files were deleted or the partition or file structure may have become corrupted or damaged.
If you have experienced data loss, remain calm. Chances are good that you can recover most if not all of your data with a data recovery software program. If you are not familiar with how to do this, pull the plug on your computer and take it to a computer tech specialist, and while there, have him back up your data. Before it’s too late.
