This past weekend, I took my two daughters to see Shorts. It was a super cute movie – but WOW – it was expensive! I spent a total of $45.00 for a matinee movie, some popcorn, and drinks. $45.00 folks – that is a lot of money in this terrible economy. Aren’t matinee movies supposed to be cheaper? I can’t imagine how much a movie in the evening would have cost me!
Here is how it broke down dollar for dollar:
- $28 for 3 tickets – That is $9.33 per ticket!
- $17 for popcorn & 2 drinks – I literally got the smallest bag of popcorn on the menu with was $7 and each small fountain soda drink was $5.
With these prices, it is no wonder people are signing up for online movie rental websites like wildfire. I am about to sign up on one myself. The savings are unbelievable when you compare it to a trip to the movie theater! Here’s how myself and my daughters will watch movies from now on:
- $8.99 – Monthly cost on Netflix and I can rent as many movies as I want each month with NO LATE FEES
- $0.33 – Popcorn (A box of 6 bags of movie theater butter popcorn costs about $2.00)

For under $10, I can watch a whole bunch of movies with my kids on our big screen TV and I don’t even have to leave the theater if my infant cries or one of them needs to use the bathroom. I can just pause the movie!
With all of the benefits of
renting movies online, I don’t know if or when I will go back to a movie theater in the near future. Their prices are so terrible, the experience is just not worth it – especially if we are seeing a movie for children. I just wonder what made movie theaters think it was okay to charge so much in the first place! $5 for a tiny little soda that costs $1 everywhere else seems a bit out of line, especially since the state of the economy is not so great. With prices rising on everything from food to gas and everything in between, families have less and less disposable income. And unless movie theaters start to lower prices, they won’t have many customers left because hardly anyone will be able to afford it!
I say go with online movie rentals and keep the extra cash in your pocket!
