Are you a single mom? If so, you may have heard about a new plan in which the government is encouraging single moms return to school with President Obama's 'Moms Return to School' Government Grant Scholarship Program. The money actually comes from the Pell Grant, which has recently been increased to provide single moms and others to return to school for a degree. Even though the economy is bad at the moment, it is a great time to consider going to college; especially if need a higher paying job. When the economy begins to improve and companies start to hire again, workers with degrees are going to be in demand. Getting your degree is going to put you ahead of other job seekers when you apply for the position you have always wanted.
Below are some of the available funds for moms and others who qualify for President Obama’s scholarship and grant programs.
Federal Pell Grants
Upon becoming President, one of Barack Obama’s first bills introduced to Congress was one to increase the amounts of Federal Pell Grants for low income students. This increased the maximum grant to $5,100 instead of $4,050 with future plans to raise it even more. If you are a single mother (or other low income student), this is one of the best grants available to you for college. All you need to do to apply for the Federal Pell Grant is to choose an accredited college or university which has the degree program you want to complete and fill out a FAFSA form requesting financial aid. The financial aid department within the college will inform you of whether or not you are eligible.
Tax Benefits for Moms Returning to College
The American Opportunity Tax Credit is also available which offers college students $4,000 in exchange for 100 hours of community service at any hospital, government unit, or other approved organization. Any full-time college student is eligible for this credit.
