As an ex serving military man myself, I do wonder if they have gone too far. In my day there was a certain rock group whose records you couldn’t play on military bases as they were suspected of being IRA sympathisers ... which in those days made for quite a boring record collection (records or vinyl went out with the iron age ... I know, I’m getting old!)
So now, it’s SNS. For those of you who are unaware of what we’re talking about it’s not another Special Services abbreviation, but the good old Social Networking Sites! Yep, we’re talking about Facebook and Twitter users who have now been banned from chatting away to the US Marine Corps, or vice versa depending on how you read the announcement.

No doubt there will be many a single lady sobbing their hearts out at the announcement made on Monday. But let’s get serious for a moment; What is the problem with Facebook, Twitter or any other social networking sites for that matter?
Well, the military to be fair are not changing their view or shocking us with new revelations, the US servicemen and women have always been banned from such
social networking sites, the problem to be quite honest is that such sites breed information gatherers and being unable to identify individuals in the same may as the traditional "meeting of new friends", such low and underhanded methods of gathering intelligence (aren’t they all low and underhanded?) are easier to achieve than ever.
So, are the media blowing this story out of all proportion? Well, actually no, if you are to side with the press and see it from their point of view, the likes of
Facebook and
Twitter do present them with a substantial I.T. risk. However, if you read the small print you will discover that it’s not as bad as it seems;
The military have in the past used
Facebook,
Twitter and perhaps other social networking sites to promote joining up, is that not a little odd? Servicemen and women may be banned in the workplace but as soon as their shift is over there’s nothing to prevent them from going home and joining in all the banter that they can muster up. Another quite strange oddity really!
So, what’s the good news and bad news from this announcement. Well actually I don’t know as nothing appears to have changed!! Just a whole lot more free advertising for
Facebook and
Twitter to soak up. Perhaps the Pentagon has shares in
social networking too!!!
