It makes me cringe to think that I’m in "that" age bracket already i.e. I’m old enough to remember the original version of many films, and in this case it’s Red Dawn. I also remember when I was younger hearing my parents bragging about being to some of the original Beatles concerts in Liverpool and wondering how old they must have been. Time flies and now it’s my turn to appear a little dated ...

I was 14 when I first saw
Red Dawn and then probably 18 by the time I had watched it dozens of times ... yes, for me it was that good! Whilst I’m not entirely sure that it will have the same impact on today’s generation as it did on mine, I for one am on tender hooks to see how they adapt the film to be relevant in today’s political arena.
Red Dawn tells the story of the beginnings of
World War III, but with a twist; the film depicts the War starting in Mid America, soil never invaded by foreign troops before. Set during an age where the risk of hitting the little red button was still fresh in people’s mind,
Red Dawn was an absolute gem and a seriously thought provoking film for impressionable teenagers such as I was at that time.
The invasion was perfectly executed by a mixture of Russian and Cuban paratroopers in the middle of Colorado; the only thing that the invaders hadn’t anticipated in advance was that they would be up against a group of young teenagers called "
Wolverines". The cast included a young Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen (from the "original" brat pack!) and Jennifer Grey and kept me on the edge of my seat each and every time I put the tape into the VHS recorder.
So, a New Dawn is upon us (excuse the pun) and one of the leading MGM/UA cast members will be none other than Tom Cruise’s son, Connor (age 14) who will play the part of the mayor’s son Daryl.
Connor Cruise previously appeared in the Will Smith film Seven Pounds as a younger version of the Oscar-nominated star of Ali. Other leading actors are Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek) and Adrianne Palicki (Friday Night Lights).
The young cast is said to be heading off for some pre film military training to get them into the spirit of their parts and will then start filming in Detroit in September. The film is set to be released in September 2010, and so convinced am I that this will be a cracking success, I have already chalked it out on my slate (sorry, I mean diary!).
If you wish to become part of the cast
Red Dawn, you’ll be delighted to know that production companies are already on the hunt for extras to take part in the filming between September and December. It’s almost worth buying myself a ticket and joining you there! I’m not a big fan of the "
remake", but this one for me, is long overdue.
