Sony appears to be hitting back at Nintendo and Microsoft with a newer and cheaper version of the Sony PlayStation 3. The cheaper version which is being branded as the "Slim" has a 120GB hard drive, reported lower power consumption and retains all the features of the current PS3.
Analysts appear keen to see what the market thinks of the launch, but with the new model becoming available on September 1st some wonder if it may already be too late for Sony.
Myself?
Well, I’m due for a newer model, but not being a console connoisseur myself, I will wait humbly as part of the second wave of shoppers, first awaiting the Sony PS3 Slim road trials to be conducted by my colleagues and their more informed family members. Only then will I make the decision to either make that purchase or to skip it if the results are not favourable.

I do on this occasion have a personal view that the
New Sony PlayStation 3 Slim may be nothing other than a red herring, in fact I would go as far as saying that since the launch of the
Nintendo Wii I can’t quite imagine what any other current console could do to offer an improved end user experience?
Let’s face it graphics can only get so good can’t they, and the games these days just appear more and more repetitive, so what do
Sony think they can offer in this new
PS3 Slim console that was not previously available in the last?
Perhaps there may be an argument for hardened
Sony PS3 owners to upgrade and take advantage of the reported lower power consumption on offer, but would that really make so much difference to your fuel bill before the newer and later models become available within the next year or so?
I am not an electronics expert by any stretch of the imagination, however in terms of business, if I owned a world full of my unsold products and still had a few dollars to invest, I may very well make a small adjustment and do a bit of repackaging in order to get existing stale stock off the shelves…or am I just being a sceptic?
In the battle of the games console I expressed to friends at the launch of
Nintendo Wii that if it proved itself in the open market that it would take years for Sony and Microsoft to catch up on the shop floor, and my perception is that their dominance still appears to remain untouched.
So, will the
Sony PlayStation 3 Slim be hot or not? Sadly, whilst they were my brand as a young adult, I feel that somewhere along the line they may have lost their way. Their only hope may be to go back to the drawing board and do something really innovative to bring the competitiveness back to the market.
Come on Sony, the movies have always appeared to show you guys and gals the way forward. Take a front seat and regain that inspirational streak. Hurry up and sell your
New PS3 Slim and do something incredible to return that "wow factor" into the market place.
We are all waiting ... impatiently so.
