I guess to get this far you must be bored with work, have a desire for success and wonder if you’ll ever make it to the top of the corporate ladder? I’m going to impart a little knowledge and some valuable tips which if you look around you may well find scattered across the internet in one guise or another already. As with everything in life, get the fundamentals right and you’ll be heading in the right direction.
Successful affiliate marketing isn’t for the faint hearted or the easily frustrated and as with other walks of life, the most successful affiliate marketers are those with the most experience and knowledge.
If you look to your bosses and think that they do not appear to work as hard as you and then wonder why in turn they also earn so much more money than you, I would venture a guess that you’re right; they do spend more time on the golf course, and do enjoy the benefits from the labor of others. Why? Possibly because they have spent 20 years or so learning their trade and now benefit from their knowledge. What they can achieve in an afternoon may well be the same as what it would take you or me months to achieve and that’s the story of life.
However, before I depress you too much, as long as you are prepared to learn the minefield of information relating to affiliate marketing, you may well make a success of it, and the best thing is, nobody controls your prospects or income, except YOU!
So, with the number seven being my lucky number, I will impart to you 7 tips to hopefully help you on your way;
- Use online forums
- Offer choice
- Avoid over advertising
- Choose something you know about
- No clicks = No sales
- You CAN succeed where others have not
- Don’t stop at one
There we have it! Not an exhaustive list and in no particular order, but enough to hopefully get you started….
1. Use Affiliate Forums
I love forums; they are generally set up by like minded people who wish to share their knowledge on their subject of expertise. I don’t think there is a place in the world that offers such value for money (FREE) from such genuinely helpful people. Use the affiliate marketers forums to ask lots of questions, network with experts and give yourself a head start.
2. Offer Choice
Once you have an affiliate website or a blog set up you will need to start selecting what you want to represent and market in order to get you going. A key word of advice on this subject is to offer the visitor choice on whatever your product or brand is going to be. Whether it is the same product from a different outlet, or a range of products from similar outlets. Choice will allow the user a chance to make up their own mind and if they know it’s available they can come back for more.
3. Avoid Over Advertising
There’s a fine line to be drawn between content and advertising; generally if I visit an affiliate site with zero content and a page full of links I will click out of the site and back to the search engine for more results. Make sure you strike a good balance. A page full of links will also quite often not be aesthetically pleasing!
4. Choose something you know about
Affiliate sites should be interesting and informative; the best way to achieve this, certainly in your first attempts at becoming an affiliate marketer, should be something that you know well or are passionate about, you will get a much better result if you can motivate the reader.
5. No Clicks = No Sales
Bearing in mind number 4 (above), you need the visitor to click through to other sites in order that you can earn money. It’s a bit like dangling the carrot in front of a donkey; you want them to keep tempting them to move forward, in this case by clicking through to your affiliated sites. If you can get the content balance correct they will come back to read more on other topics and click through again and again and again.
6. You CAN succeed where others haven’t
Undoubtedly some subjects will draw more visitors than others, but I would not limit your affiliate site to those well known "money" subjects, as where the money can be found more readily you will always find more competition to get any of it. Ultimately you will need to follow the money to get your bread and butter money, but be imaginative and you’ll be surprised what you can think of that others haven’t.

7. Don’t stop at one site
A single affiliate site will not always produce you the amount of revenue that you require to earn a living. Once you have a site established, let the internet do the work for you and get on with producing other affiliate sites, revisiting to update and apply new learning’s. Essentially your work on the first should be done, think of new and more innovative ways to get on in the
affiliate marketing world.
Affiliate marketers in my mind should be called Solution Brokers, they recognize a need, inform the user of what is required and then provide appropriate avenues for the user to receive that advice or product from a specialist in that field. It’s nothing new in my mind, just another way of packaging a product.
Remember the fundamentals, be determined and control your own destiny. Have no illusions, unless you hit it lucky it will take time but have faith, it will happen.
