Following on from my recent box office article relating to top grossing movies of the 1980’s, I have decided to continue on the quest to bring you more top movie information, this time for the 1990’s. Unlike my previous article, on this occasion I have not outlined the "decade’s" top grossing movies, but instead have looked at the top movie of "each" year within that decade.
The figures themselves do not take into account inflation and therefore only illustrate what was taken in the year of release. The results have been gleaned from various web based sources including Wikipedia, and generally known to be accurate sources of such information. This one could be an arduous task for me as I have watched all but one of the movies (apologies, but I was never a Star Wars sequel fan!) and the list represents many of my all time favourites. I will try and keep my comments brief!
The list for the top grossing movies of the 1990’s is as follows;
1990 – Ghost $505,702,588
That great blockbuster starring the late Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore is an apt start to the top movies of the 1990’s and was largely responsible for me continuing on as a bit of a Swayze fan. Swayze played the Ghost of a murdered banker who was hilariously assisted by Whoopi Goldberg in coming back to warn his fiancé Demi Moore of the impending danger she faced from their best friend and co worker. I doubt many people haven’t seen it and indeed I watched it again recently when it was aired on UK TV yet again, but can we ever get bored of it?
1991 – Terminator 2 – Judgement Day $205,400,000
So what did we think about this one? I guess Arnie may have said “I’m Back!” The film had a lovely twist which had me sitting on the edge of my seat all those years ago with the terminator coming back to become the defender from the terminator ... confused? You should be; it was a confusing start to a great film in which the original terminator appeared to have gained the human touch!
1992 – Aladdin $217,350,219
I became a big fan of the animated blockbuster in the 1990’s and whilst Aladdin was not my movie of choice, if you like the original storybook tale you would certainly not feel let down by this one. Its huge success led to massive merchandising follow ups and whilst not a great fan of the movie, it must be said I spent many a late night mastering the Aladdin platform game which followed.
1993 – Jurassic Park $357,067,947
Oh Yes! Tipping the boundaries of movie special effects and with the UK’s very own Sir Richard Attenborough amongst the all star cast, this was a show stopper. This regularly reappears on terrestrial TV and is one that I will happily sit through time and time again.
1994 – Forrest Gump $329,694,499
"Run Forrest Run" became the saying in school yards all round the globe, not to mention offices as well! Whilst I wait patiently for you Americans to vote Tom Hanks as your next president, this movie will take my vote every time.
1995 – Toy Story $191,773,049
The world of merchandisers made an error on this one believing that Woody, the Tom Hanks animated sheriff character would take the toy stores by storm. In fact it was Buzz Light-year that we all couldn’t get enough of and if you look back at my older posts you will see the lengths I had to go to in order to get hold of one; It certainly felt like "To infinity and Beyond!"
1996 – Independence Day $306,169,268
OK, so if you like "Gung Ho" then this is the movie for you. It’s one I love to hate yet find myself watching each time it appears on the small screen. Will Smith plays the alien beating US air force pilot who loves to light up after "The Fat Lady Sings" and by the end of the movie has encouraged Jeff Goldblum to do the same! (Who by the way is NOT dead yet as reported on the web earlier this year!)

1997 – Titanic $1,848,879,955
This movie could surely never have failed. The story of the sinking of that “unsinkable” ship is something we learn about in history classes and is a quite fascinating story. I’m sure Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio couldn’t have believed their luck when they landed those leading roles. If you’d given Bart Simpson the leading role I still would have watched the film!
1998 – Armageddon $553,709,788
Bruce Willis soared in my estimation following the making of this film. Whilst it kept him in the type cast all American hero roles, I did thoroughly enjoy his part in this film. The cast was great and whilst the crew wouldn’t be my first choice of people to save the world, they sure did go about it in an interesting and entertaining way.
1999 – Star Wars – The Phantom Menace $924,317,558
The second biggest grossing movie of the decade, I’m afraid to say I haven’t yet watched it! Star Wars historically hits the small screens around Christmas time and therefore maybe this will be the year as it sure looks like it’ll be a quiet one. A big fan of the first couple of movies I have a worry that this will just ruin them for me, what a sceptic!
That concludes the top 10 grossing movies of the 1990’s. They are all readily available on DVD and I can certainly recommend 9 out of 10 as highly, highly watchable.
Back soon for a Simon Says sequel.
