First and foremost, what is your level of expertise? Are you a real tech newbie, someone who is scared by their computer and is likely to need help? Well then technical support is very important if you fit into this category and something you should take into consideration. Some companies offer free technical support and others charge for support so a really cheap antivirus product may not end up being cheap if you have to pay $2.95 per minute of support.
Are you a tinkerer (yes, I am sure it is a word)? Do you like to play with your software, change settings and see what it can do or do you prefer to just install and forget about it. Many of todays best antivirus software programs have a simple, install and forget side to them and then advanced users (tinkerers) can switch to advanced mode.
Advanced settings are necessary if you are using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) or are
playing games online that require certain components of antivirus software to be turned off. But if you are an internet novice and just use the internet for browsing and emailing and shopping … you are probably looking for an install and forget antivirus program.
So while a lot of sites rate the best antivirus software programs based on their ability to detect viruses or malware, that is not the only factor you should consider. Think about what type of user you are and what your requirements are. Of course having a quality product that protects you from viruses is important … but so is having an antivirus program that fits your “style”.
