So the lastest entry to the antivirus arena comes from Sunbelt Software, the makers of CounterSpy with their product, Vipre Antivirus & Antispyware. This is their first antivirus and antispyware integration and they seem to have done a nice job with the product. One of the big benefits of being new to the antivirus market is that they do not have the years of historical programming that bogs down some of the bigger, better known names. Vipre is a clean product with a nice interface and priced at just $29.95 it is competitive with many of the other top rated products on the market.

The installation process was fast and the initial download was not overwhelming. If I were to complain about one component of the product it would be the installation process when they get to the settings area. The settings start to ask questions about Proxy Settings and Protection Levels and I found this to be a little disconcerting as a consumer. I have installed many security products so I understand what they are asking for, but I think that for the average consumer, this can be intimidating. Does the average user know what a Proxy Setting is? I am always partial to have "presets" in the program and give the user the option through an "advanced" module to edit those settings. Other than that the product installed well and has run very smoothly with little to no interference with other products.
While I have only been running the product for a short time on this machine, I am overall very pleased with the performance and the notifications of updates and scans. Remember, we always right these reviews from the average consumers perspective and the average user would rather know they are protected but not ever have to do anything to stay protected. Vipre falls into that category. Their customer service section of their site was extensive and impressive but their phone support is limited to week days and that can leave a user hanging on the weekend. As a Vipre Antivirus owner you get access to forums and one of the largest security communities on the web which if you have the slightest understanding of security software, should be able to get you the answer to any question you have without a phone call.
