Chevy Volt to get 230 MPG
GM announced mileage expectations for the Chevy Volt this morning, part of the solution to the American Auto Industry problems, and the announced numbers exceeded expectations by far. The battery operated Chevy Volt is expected to get 230 MPG in city driving and the rumor is, that number is llight but far beyond the expectations of 100-120 MPG that the media has been expecting.

The gold standard of gas mileage comparisons has been the Toyota Prius which gets 46 MPG. The Prius gets its power from gasoline while the Chevy Volt gets its power from two sources, the lithium-ion batteries and gasoline. So the Volt goes up to 40 miles on the battery power before the gasoline kicks in. When the car is running on gasoline it will still get 50 MPG and the batteries will be available for additional power for passing and merging.
While this announcement has created a large buzz around the Chevy Volt, the Volt will not be released until Nov. 2010. With an estimated mileage of 230 MPG, this is sure to create an enormous amount of interest in the Chevy Volt. I wonder what other announcements they have up their sleeve before the release of the Volt.
