Sgt. Jared Monti died in 2006 in Afghanistan, one of many soldiers who have given their lives to honor and protect the United States.  This past week at the funeral of my wifes grandfather I came to have a whole understanding and respect for what it means to be a soldier.  He did not die in combat like Jared Monti but instead he died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 86.  This was a military funeral and I can tell you that the phrase "the thanks of a grateful nation" takes on a whole new meaning and level of emotions when you are standing behind the woman receiving the flag.  I could not imagine the grief associated with receiving that flag but I can imagine the pride that must be felt.

Today Sgt. Monti's family will receive the Medal of Honor from President Obama.
