Every year, antivirus vendors come out with the latest and greatest technology to protest you from the bad guys and every year you need to decide whether to renew your virus protection or upgrade to the latest version from your antivirus vendor.  This years antivirus software is no exception and many antivirus vendors have upgraded their products with various features and increased the speed at which you are protected.  With all the upgrades, the most important component of these products are your antivirus engine and the daily or hourly virus updates that you receive from the vendor.  Maintaining those updates are of the utmost importance.

I suggest, if you like your antivirus software and have a relatively recent version, 2009 or maybe 2008, that you renew your antivirus software with your current vendor.  This is  the simplest way for you to maintain your protection for another year.  If you are happy with your antivirus vendor but have an older version, 2008 or even earlier, you should upgrade to the latest protection but I suggest that you do so with the same vendor that you are currently using.  The reason for this is that installing and uninstalling of antivirus software is one of the most difficult customer support issues that antivirus companies face today.  Removing the software from one company and installing a newer version from that company should insure that you will be able to get the appropriate support if necessary.

If you decide to renew your software, never use the popup screens that remind you that your software is expiring because not only do legitimate antivirus companies use these, but rogue antivirus companies do too.  So if you intend to renew your antivirus software, simply go to Start, All Programs and open your current antivirus program.  Within the program there will be the ability to renew or extend your subscription.

Of course, if you have no active antivirus software or are not happy with your current vendor, I suggest you immediately do your research and purchase virus protection from a well known antivirus company.
