I recently saw a story on the news that I found extremely disturbing, I am sure many of you saw this as well. The story was about the Hyatt Hotels. Here is an over view of what happened. Basically they had their current staff (laundry, housecleaning and jobs in those areas) train other employees, for the purpose of having staff to cover these same people when they took their vacations, or any other extended time off. Little did they know that these new employees that they were training were sent in from a company in Georgia that Hyatt outsourced to actually be THEIR REPLACEMENTS!
The Hyatt like many other business’s in the United States is experiencing lower profits. So to off set these loses, they decided that they would lay off their current employees, many of which are single moms or people just keeping their heads above water, and were being paid $15 an hour and great benefits. So rather than starting at the top and lowering the salaries of those who could actually afford a pay cut, they decided they would bring in new personnel that they only would pay $8 an hour and no benefits!
As you can imagine this angered quite a few people. When questioned by the media, their response was that the people who had been laid off would be offered jobs with other companies and that those jobs MIGHT offer the same pay and benefits as the Hyatt, and just to show how much the company cares about these former employees, they would be doing the job search for them. Doesn’t that just warm your heart? The Governor of Massachusetts has suspended all state business with the Hyatt pending a complete review of the facts. So far, it has not had any affect on the Hyatt’s actions.
This is just another example of how far our country has fallen. I know that this is an unpopular opinion. However, what happened to the days of go to school, go to college, get a good job with an honest company and stay with that company through thick and thin and they in turn will stick with you. That life plan is now nothing more than a blurb in a history book somewhere. Gone are the days where companies would band together WITH their employees and everyone would tighten their belts because worker and owners alike understood that a potion of something is BETTER THAN ALL OF NOTHING!
If this country is to not just going get out of this recession, but to once again take our place as a great nation, we MUST change the way we think, and this change MUST START AT THE TOP! These executives with their golden parachutes have no regard for the people whose sweat put the money in the pockets of those who gave them the very same parachute. Instead of the government bailing out and taking over companies, the executives should be being paid less money and that money should be cycled back into the company. If the government bails out a failing company, then the people who made all the bad decisions that put the company in that position should be fired and not with a severance package, but with instructions on how to collect unemployment.,

What can we do, you may ask? There are more options than you may think. Call the Hyatt or send them an email or a letter and tell them what you think about what they are doing. Tell them that they will not be the recipient of any more of your business. If you own a company and you have events there, no matter what the price is tell them you will have it somewhere else. If you attend conferences or self help- or marriage retreats, call the organization and tell them what the Hyatt has done and tell them you will not attend if they have it at the Hyatt. If you are a member of a church, a para-church organization or any other entity that advertises or plans events as a group, notify them that you will not continue attending the event(s) if they are held at the Hyatt.
Each person is just one voice. However, one voice joined with many is a moving living force that CAN change things. Remember, today it is the Hyatt, which company could be next? It could be yours. We can change this country back to what made it great ONE INJUSTICE AT A TIME. It has been said that the best way for evil (or injustice) to triumph is for good people to do nothing! Stand together America and we will make a difference.
