Always check a
freelancer's portfolio before you decide to hire them. Their past work will be an indication of what type of work they can offer to you. You can also ask them for references as well if are investing a lot of money into the project. If a
freelancer can't provide you with past samples of his work, then it may be a mistake to hire him even if he sounds like he will do a good job. Many people can sound like they know what they are doing, but may not be able to implement it.
Don't always hire the
freelancer with the lowest rates. Many times they may have low rates because their service is not up to par with others. Instead, you may want to look for someone who is more middle of the road in their rates. If you can afford it, then by all means go for the guru who has the proven track record but also has the rates to go with it.
Never pay a
freelancer the whole project amount upfront. All business-wise
freelancers will collect a deposit, usually no more than 50% of the project, which saves them from being stiffed by clients, but if they require more than that before they even start the project, that may be a sign to run far away. There is no reason why a
freelancer should need the whole project payment before starting. Protect you money and business and never work with a
freelancer who demands that.
Lastly, be sure that the
freelancer you hire is available by several forms of communication. They should provide you with a valid email, instant messenger id, Skype id, or phone number. It is a good idea to get at least two ways to contact a your freelancer before you hire them. Sometimes things may come up during the middle of a project and you need to be able to reach your
freelancer as soon as possible, as long as it is during working hours.
When you hire a
freelancer for any type of project for your business, you need to make sure that you take precautions and safeguard yourself and your business from getting scammed or taken by a
freelancer. Although, this does not happen often, it is a good idea to beware of it and play it safe.
