What is Supplemental Prescription Insurance

Many HMO’s and PPO’s in an attempt to keep insurance costs down, cover less prescriptions or require more out of pocket expenses from those insured. This can cause extreme difficulties in those with higher priced medications or those medications that do not have a generic equivalency. Supplemental prescription insurance helps to cover the costs of drugs that are not currently covered or only partially covered under your existing plan.

How Supplemental Insurance Helps

Most people who have an HMO or PPO through their employer have prescription drug coverage. Individuals who have private insurance also have prescription drug coverage. Some plans exclude name-brand drugs completely and only cover generic, which becomes a problem for those in need of medications that have no generic equivalent. This is where supplemental prescription insurance is helpful since it pays for some of your medications. In other cases, it may pick up the cost of specialized medication that normal prescription coverage does not pay.

The goal of the supplemental plan is to pay exclusively for otherwise uncovered medications or pay a portion of what a normal plan pays. This in turn means less out of pocket expenses to you, which of course is what you want.

Another feature of a supplemental plan is reducing the overall amount you pay for all prescriptions, including generic. Most prescription drug plans have a complicated drug-tier program that shows you what they pay and what they will not. Newer drugs are typically not covered or only a small percentage is covered since they are more expensive.

Cost of Supplement Plans

A supplemental plan is one that is administered through one of the private insurance companies. Many do not offer the prescription plan at all, so checking and comparing plans online is going to be the best option. The price of the plans will vary depending on age, geography, and current health issues. This type of insurance is relatively new and many more companies are beginning to offer it as a way to help with the high cost of prescription medication.

Some prescription drug plans are only available to those under a specified income limit, so you will need to check for which plan your state offers. Other times it is only available to those on Medicare or over a certain age, so when checking for supplemental plans, if you do not fall into one of these categories, you will need to dig a little deeper in order to see what is available in your state.

Everyone wants to save money on out of pocket expenses for prescription medication. Those on drugs that have no generic equivalent and newer medications are often responsible for the entire cost of the medicine or the majority, which can add up to hundred’s of dollars each month. Shopping around for a supplemental drug plan can help offset the high costs of prescriptions.
