Many things have changed over the course of history. At one time most people were convinced the world was flat. Until the 1970’s the majority of women believed that they were meant to clean houses and birth children. There is one thing that hasn’t changed. Both men and women are forever searching for a new way to meet his or her soul mate. As a result, the world of online dating has exploded. I’m sure that most of you out there know of at least one couple that met through a digital match maker. To take that a step further, add to the virtual mix an online community of over 12 million. I am speaking of the World of Warcraft. People across times zones, oceans, and language barriers have been finding love on this MMORPG. I know of two people myself who are currently dating, and met because of their mutual guild alliance.
There are a few publicized stories of a man and a woman meeting on WOW, dating, and eventually falling in love and getting married. One of the most well known couplings occurred in Europe. A single woman, for the purposes of the story we’ll call her Trish, played as an Orc Hunter. She met up on her server with a man, Fred, who was an Undead Warlock. After two years of courtship the pair married, virtually and in the flesh. They are still happily together and have started a family.
Flirtations in world of Azeroth are not an uncommon thing. I was intrigued by this phenomenon; having seen and heard two friends become more myself. I scouted a few single websites. Surprisingly, many people noted their addiction to WOW and are seeking a partner with the same penchant for the game. At least the two share a common interest. After all, couples have come together for more absurd reasons.

The pinnacle of the World of Warcraft dating scene, as in real life, is marriage. My husband was invited to one such gathering. He was reluctant to attend, but I forced him to RSVP out of sheer curiosity. The two of us huddled in front of the computer in your pajamas. The wedding was actually quite traditional considering the absurd surroundings. There was a best man and a maid of honor. The groom stood at the altar and lovingly looked at his wife to be. The blushing bride walked down the aisle, escorted by another guild member. The two exchanged traditional vows, and became WOW husband and wife. Whether or not they took this a step further in real life, I have no idea.
So the next time you’re lonely and looking to make a "human", or dwarf, or mage connection, give World of Warcraft a try. There are literally millions of people waiting to find a new raiding partner, on their computer screen and in life.
