There are some things in life you can never fully prepare for, having a baby is one of them. Childbirth is a grueling process and labor is a unique experience for every woman. In fact a woman can have a very different experience with each child thus eliminating the possibility of complete preparedness from past examples. Although you won’t be completely ready no matter what you do you can at least be as prepared as possible. The following are some tips on things to do while preparing for labor in order to make your birthing experience as pleasant and memorable as possible.
Take a childbirth class Educate yourself on what to expect. The content of the classes may seem obvious at times but it’s really helpful and there are lots of techniques you can learn as well as terminology so you’ll understand what the nurses and doctor are saying when they tell you "you’re a 5, at a -1 station and 90% effaced."
Practice Kegel exercises Work on your Kegel vaginal exercises. Tighten and release these muscles daily in the months and weeks leading up to birth. It will help you push the baby out and recover afterwards.
Work on your breathing You’ll learn some breathing techniques in the classes you should be taking, they’re easy but you need to practice them because it’s easy to forget them or get so caught up in the moment that you have trouble focusing and don’t do them correctly. The more you practice the easier they’ll become.
Know your pain tolerance Be realistic with how much pain you can tolerate, it will help you determine whether or not you need pain medication as well as how much of a dosage you should receive.
Drink lots of fluids Make sure you take in lots of water before and even during labor. While they likely won’t let you drink water during labor you will be allowed ice chips. Enjoy those ice chips so your mouth will remain moist and help you remain as comfortable and relaxed as possible.
Pack your hospital bag ahead of time You never know if you’ll be one of those people who will go into labor early or not. Have your bag ready to go just in case so you won’t be rushing around at the last second trying to get everything together.
Sleep Get as much as possible before the baby comes because you won’t be getting much after. Even when you’re in active labor try to sleep. This is much easier to do if you get the epidural because you’ll be more relaxed but no matter what you choose try to sleep somewhat.

Choose a focal point Having something to look at and focus on can help during the pushing stage. Concentrate on it so your mind is clear and you can listen to the doctor while you push and breathe.
