Along with the recent announcement of nominees for the American Music Awards (AMAs) came much controversy over the nominations for Michael Jackson's "Number Ones" album. The thing is that "Number Ones" was released in 2003 by Michael Jackson but is competing for favorite album in the pop/rock field against such artist as Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga. "Number Ones" is a compilation of Michael Jackson's best songs from his career. Only a few of the songs on the album were even released in this decade.
Jackson, who passed away this summer, already won several American Music Awards for this album and the songs that were on it. So, why is the album up for nomination again 6 years after it was released? The American Music Awards are based on sales and radio data from Nielsen Sound Scan. When Michael Jackson passed away earlier this year, "Number Ones" sales went through the roof as people were buying the album to remember Michael and pay tribute to him. Even though, the album currently ranks in the top 2009 bestselling albums, many people in the music industry are upset over the nominations for the album considering it was already nominated when it was first released. It's expected that when a person like Michael Jackson dies, album sales are going to dramatically increase, which is what happened, but that doesn't mean that the artist deserves more awards on the album.

Jackson is nominated for 5 different AMAs. Some music critics are predicting that he will sweep the nominations and win all 5 categories. If this is the case, then the American Music Awards may just lose some credibility and feel more like a tribute to the late singer rather than an awards show. If the AMAs wanted to pay tribute to the singer, they could have easily come up with a segment for the show like the MTV Video Music Awards did. It is fair that artists like Taylor Swift, Eminem, and Beyonce may potentially lose out on music awards to a person who has not released a new album or song in over 5 years? How can an artist win Artist of the Year when he has not even released a new song in the past 6 years? Doesn't that seem a little odd? Many people feel that the American Music Awards could have handled this situation a little better. A tribute to Michael Jackson could have been a great way to honor the songs and contributions that he made to the music world, but nominating him for an album that was released in 2003 makes little sense. The winners of the AMAs are chosen by the fans through online voting through abc.com. The American Music Awards will air live on November 22 on ABC.
