Have you fallen victim to a computer crash in the past, and wish to prevent losing important files in the future? Recent technology allows you to maintain a working copy of your hard drive at a remote storage facility. Better yet, you’re given the ability to do this in a secure manner, ensuring that your files are protected from intrusion. The Star Reviews team ventured off through the Information Superhighway to find the best data backup websites. On our journey, we happened to come across DriveHQ.com. How did they compare to the competition? Here's the scoop...
What's New with DriveHQ Data Backup?- Drive HQ Online Backup 4.0 – integrated data backup software.
- Plans tailored to fit the needs of individuals and small & large businesses.
- Free 1 GB, no-expiration starter plan.
Our Favorite DriveHQ Feature: Our favorite feature undoubtedly was the Drive HQ Online Backup 4.0 software. The software, first and foremost, allows you to back up your files securely via state-of-the-art encryption, prior to them even leaving your computer. Additionally, you’re also given the option to manage files via the software, as well as access multiple computers from one data backup software package. Needless to say, we were very impressed.
The DriveHQ Experience: DriveHQ is a online storage facility providing users the ability to securely backup and access their files from a remote storage facility. While several plans are available to the customer, we found this to be somewhat of a limitation, as it essentially complicates the buying process. We counted in excess of 10 plans available. That being said, we weren’t sure which one to go with.
DriveHQ’s data backup software was our drawing point on the company, although it has minor limitations. Users simply download the data backup software onto their Windows computer (sorry Mac users – it doesn’t look like there’s room for you here!), and work with a simple process only requiring nothing more than a few clicks to create a full data backup. The download itself is only 16 MB, and thus won’t eat up a great deal of memory on your computer. Additionally, the automatic back up feature allows you to create a complete data backup on a daily or weekly basis. With limited effort on your part, how could you say ‘no’ to that!
DriveHQ.com’s web site interface is a bit cluttered, and otherwise complicated to the eye. While other services are provided, we chose only to explore the data backup, and found it to be a bit confusing initially. The data backup’s homepage compares DriveHQ’s prices to other competitors, making it very difficult to tell who’s who. This almost drew us off immediately, which made us worry what the consumer will think about it.
The free plan is average in relation to other site’s we’ve reviewed, and offers users a no-strings-attached plan that gives 1 GB of free storage. While this is fine for documents such as typed (Microsoft Word or Excel) files, it won’t go very far with pictures or music files. Depending on what type of material you’re looking for, you’ll probably be better off putting out a few dollars per month to allow yourself more storage. Here’s the thing – we truly think that some of the plans are a bit over priced, especially when you get into the higher memory capabilities. Lower memory capabilities are about industry standard.

DriveHQ’s Customer Service: We really appreciated the variety of options available for customer service and support. While no physical telephone number was provided, the demos, e-mail options, and customer forums made up for a live person’s absence. The Frequently Asked Questions page offered users the ability to search for their questions from a variety of previously-asked questions, although this of course requires a bit of time and effort on your part.
Upside:
Free data backup software package, good customer support, free storage plan available.
Downside:
Too many plans to choose from, and pricing is a bit on the high side.
