Food Insurance Review

Food insurance is no longer a new concept, it’s not so different than your car, home, medical or life insurance. For those that live in flood prone areas, it’s not all that different than getting flood insurance either. The basic concept with food insurance is this: You receive a stockpile of food in order to be covered in case of an emergency or disaster strike.  The food is all packaged for long term use so it can sit in your basement for years until it is needed.

Food Insurance offers a number of products for food storage, ranging from 2 weeks to 12 months. For a price of $199, Food Insurance provides an emergency pack of food that is intended to last one adult for two weeks. in the case of an emergency or natural disaster. The package includes three meals a day for 14 days. The foods are gourmet-type foods that have been freeze-dried. Because the products have been freeze-dried, Food Insurance guarantees a shelf life of at least 10 years. (Their long-term food storage program provides foods with a shelf life of 25 years.) Breakfast meals include blueberry pancakes and scrambled eggs and bacon. Dinner meals include things like beef stroganoff, chicken teriyaki and lasagna, just to name a few. The meals are made by simply adding water, making them easy to prepare.

The food also comes with a convenient “grab-n-go” backpack, making it very convenient in emergency situations. Their is a unique calculator on the website that allows you to calculate just how many meals you will need based upon your family size. Waterproof matches, a cooking tin, 1500+ use water filter and a reusable heat source are all included in the package. The company also offers financing options as well.

The FoodInsurance website had an extensive library of disaster preparation articles and links to emergency agencies within each state. They clearly spelled out what foods you would receive along with how many meals would be included for the $199 per person price. An FAQ section is included to provide answers to commonly asked questions such as where the emergency food should be kept. There are vegetarian and gluten-free options which I am sure would be appreciated if those are your personal requirements.

The emergency food package provided by Food Insurance provides a family with peace of mind in the event of disaster. Storage space for the food pack, which measures 12″ x 12″ x 25″, is minimal since the food is freeze dried, making it take up less space. The shelf life is extremely long, which we think is a wonderful feature. You purchase the food stockpile once and you are covered for 10 to 25 years! The Food Insurance product is more convenient than stockpiling of food on your own because the shelf-life is much longer and the storage space required is much smaller.

The backpack of food and supplies for one person weighs about 21 pounds. While this is not a problem for an adult, for a child it may be a bit heavy. Further, the meals that the programs offers are marketed as gourmet-type foods. While this is wonderful for an adult, we think they should add some kid-friendly type of meals to their package. Foods such as chicken tenders, hot dogs and pizza appeal to children more and would be a worthwhile enhancement to the program. We also noticed that there was not much mention of sweets, so perhaps some chocolate would be a nice addition to the meal package. Lastly, if coffee could be freeze-dried and packaged, we feel that would be a wonderful addition. Overall, we feel that the Food Insurance emergency pack as well as their long-term food items are valuable products considering the recent waves of natural disasters. Since it provides peace of mind that can lasts for over 25 years, we think it is an excellent value.
