Garmin 5″ Waterproof Marine GPS

Many boater and fisherman love the old-fashioned idea of setting sail and fishing anywhere at any time with no regard. I own a boat and I am not one of the old fashioned type.  With new technologies like the Garmin 5″ Waterproof Marine GPS and Chartplotter with Sounder, boating and fishing can be even more exciting and more importantly, safer.

The Garmin 5″ Waterproof GPS and Chartplotter with Sounder not only has a GPS feature but it also has a chartplotter with sounder for the avid fisher. Garmin is a company that has been around since 1989. Their goal is to produce navigation equipment that makes boating and fishing easier and makes life out on the water safer. Their line of products covers various interests including automotive, aviation, marine, fitness, outdoors and wireless applications.

The Garmin 5″ Waterproof Marine GPS and Chartplotter with Sounder is an amazing device. It contains pre-loaded maps of all the coastal areas in the United States and Bahamas. You can also add Canada maps as well. It has a high sensitive GPS navigation system that is precise and accurate. The marine GPS can also receive up-to-date weather information with an optional satellite receiver. Having weather alerts is important when you are out at sea and, in my opinion, this feature should be included with the GPS. You can, however, purchase SD cards with the Garmin device in order to load additional maps without having to be connected to a computer.

The sounder was the best feature of the Garmin 5” Waterproof Marine GPS and Chartplotter with Sounder. This powerful transducer shows in clear detail depth contours and fish targets. It doesn’t matter if you are fishing in a small river or in a big lake, this GPS will show you everything you need to get the big catch. The sound is crisp and clear and the 5” screen is large enough for easy viewing. The screen has 234 x 320 pixels and the fact that you can view the screen even with the sun brightly shining is a major plus. The unit is also very durable and rugged. This is an important feature because as every boater knows, it’s easy to accidently drop things or hit bumpy waves while out at sea. Another great feature is that you can go directly to the Garmin website and download maps, if needed, before heading out on the boat. You can download all bodies of water, no matter how large or small and can even download a map of the United States Inland Lakes and Northeast Inland Lakes.

The price of the Garmin 5″ Waterproof Marine GPS and Chartplotter with Sounder was a bit steep but it does have quite a few different features and aside from the GPS unit, it also comes with a swivel mount, front cover, power cable and instructions. Garmin does supply a choice of three types of warranties for consumers. The choices are the standard two year limited warranty, two year parts and onboard and two year OEM parts and onboard. The standard two year limited warranty covers parts such as the GPS sensor and chartplotter.

Even though the price tag is a bit high on this unit, I would recommend the Garmin 5″ Waterproof Marine GPS and Chartplotter with Sounder to anyone setting foot on a boat. It’s practical, safe and can give you updates regarding weather and fish activity that you would not be able to predict on your own.
