Every time you apply for a loan or fill out a credit application, most lenders simply pull your credit score to see if you are approved or denied. If the score is too low, you will be out of luck. For an iffy credit score, they may take a few days to make their decision. For a decent credit score, you may get instant approval. How do you know where you'll fall? You need to check your credit rating before you apply using one of the Internet's many credit report websites. We checked to see which sites had the most to offer. MyFICO.com was one of the first resources we turned to. Here's how they measured up to the competition...

Our Favorite Feature:

We liked the FICO Score Simulator, which is an interactive tool that allows you to see what you can do to improve your FICO scores. When you order a FICO score, you can put that number into the tool and then use different scenarios to see how your score will change. The number will actually move up and down as you input different situations.

The My FICO Experience:

If you want to see the same credit score that most lenders and banks will see, then MyFICO.com is the only way to go. Ninety-percent of the largest banks and lenders use FICO credit scores when approving applicants for loans, bank accounts, and lines of credit.

The only problem is that you have three FICO scores, one from each credit report, and lenders and landlords will usually only check one. Since most people’s scores can range as much as 100 points between the different agencies, you will need to purchase all three in order to get a complete view of your credit situation. FICO knows this and charges around $15 per “pull” (that means $45 each time you check all three scores.)

The first thing we did at MyFICO.com was check out the products. They actually had five different options, including two credit monitoring services – one of which offered a 30-day free trial. We could order one credit report or get a slight discount for ordering all three.

Next, we went to the FICO forums. Here we found a community of people who are all dedicated to improving their poor scores or keeping their good scores and helping others do the same. There was a wealth of information on almost every credit related subject you could imagine. People also proudly displayed their old FICO scores and their new and improved credit FICO scores, plus the new credit they had obtained because of them.

Finally, we headed to the Credit Education section, where we were able to find answers to all of our questions, as well as topics like “What’s in Your FICO Score”, “Credit Score Facts & Fallacies”, and “Know Your Rights.”

Score Watch – Monitors your Equifax credit report and FICO score. Two payment options: A 30-day free trial and then one yearly payment of $89.95 or a monthly payment of $8.95 (3 month minimum commitment) with no free trial.
Suze Orman’s FICO Kit Platinum – Gives you all three credit reports and scores, plus access to exclusive tools to help boost your credit, keep your finances organized, and get on the road to paying off your debt for $49.95.
FICO Credit Complete – Gives you all three credit reports and scores. Two payment options: a one-time payment of $47.85 or a yearly payment of $42.84.
FICO Standard – One credit report and score from the company of your choice for $15.95.
FICO Quarterly Monitoring – Monitors your TransUnion credit report and score, plus allows you to see both once every three months. Two payment options including $4.95 a month or $49.95 a year.

You can contact FICO by phone or e-mail. They also have a customer support center, with a wealth of information that enables you to get many common questions answered immediately. Plus, you can always ask on the forum, where other members are more than willing to lend a hand.

If you do decide to go the way of email or phone support, you won't be disappointed. We received an email response to our question the very same day we sent it and phone support answered our call with no hold time at all. FICO knows credit, and they definitely know customer service as well.

Upside:

Downside:

You have to pay around $45 each time you want to see a fresh report and score from all three credit bureaus.
