When it comes down to pulling your own credit report, who better to turn to then the actual credit reporting agency itself? Since TransUnion is one of the three major credit reporting agencies, we had to make them one of our first stops while investigating the best credit report websites. Here's what we found:
What's New at TransUnion?
- 7 Day free access to your credit report and scores
- $25,000 Identity theft insurance
- Personalized debt analysis and credit trending
- TrueCreditLock protection service
StarReviews' Favorite TransUnion Feature: Our favorite feature on TransUnion is the 7 day risk-free trial. Consumers get unlimited access to their 3 bureau reports and scores for a full 7 days. Consumers can cancel their membership at any time during the 7 day trial period and will not be billed. This free report does not withhold any information like some of the other free trial offers. You are able to see everything that a lender would see if they pulled your credit report.
The TransUnion Experience: One thing we liked is that when you are filling out the form to order your credit report, you do not have to enter your full social security number. You only have to enter the last 4 digits which is comforting considering that you are sending your private information over the internet. Many similar credit reporting and monitoring websites require that you enter your full social security number which can be a concern to some consumers given the amount of identity theft that happens online.
As we signed up for the service, we were informed that TransUnion will share personal information with third parties so that they can market their products and services to you and there was not a choice to “opt out”. Consumers should not have to worry that they personal credit information will be shared with third parties when simply ordering a credit report.
After ordering our credit report, we browsed the site and found a credit learning center page that educates consumers about managing their credit and life. You can take a financial literacy quiz or learn the latest information on the 2010 credit card reform bill (aka the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure act). There is a personalized loan rate analysis tool which could be useful to some people.
The Help page will direct you to get answers to commonly asked questions such as how to file a dispute on your credit report and what to do if you are asked to verify your identity in the ordering process. Overall, we were able to get to our credit report and scores in a reasonable amount of time and we found many answers to our questions directly on the Help page.
