XP Antivirus is not Antivirus at all

In all my years working with security software I have never seen a program to dangerous and openly marketed at XP Antivirus. A few weeks ago an elderly gentleman in my apartment complex asked me to come over to look at his computer and this was the first up close and personal look I had at this malicious program. On almost any action you took on the computer you received a popup that you had 372 viruses on your computer and you had to have them removed. Real scary looking stuff but off course you were paying $29.99 to the company that installed this program on your machine.

Now I am a relatively experienced techie type and it took me hours to get most of XP Antivirus off this machine just so I could install some proper anti-malware program to get the rest removed.

So how did he get this? I have no idea and in all likelihood, he doesn't know either. But since that time I have seen this program everywhere. They are aggressive in their marketing as they are located in a country that will not extradite them to the US. Yesterday (Aug 14th) they took over Google Adwords and were advertising as clear as daylight how great of an antivirus program they had. But again, the free scan turned into a nightmare.

Recently you have seen the CNN and now the MSNBC Alerts but those are extreme fishing sites. I tested one this morning and you get a popup indicating that you need to install a new flash player but the program is that you are stuck in an endless loop that you either click "Cancel" or "Ok" and "OK" leads to disaster. I had to go into my Task Manager and force quit Firefox to avoid this program.

Today I have seen Norton and McAfee Siteadvisor warning about these sites. This is not just XPAntivirus.com but as fast as their sites get shut down they open under different variations. I can not say enough about this program and what I have seen it do but for the average computer user who gets stuck in a loop with this program ... do not hesitate to shut down your computer immediately.
